Christmas. Vintage Holiday Graphics (Icons) Reviews
The latest Taschen Icon graphics book finally catches up with the American festive season and presents a delightful collection of historical printed matter. I liked the comprehensive selection of items, cards, wrapping paper, parcel tags, consumer ads, magazine covers, photos of house decorations, sheet music covers and all in colour. Historically they come from Victorian times to about the mid-sixties.Kris Kringle obviously gets a good showing and I was surprised to see that he was depicted as a plump guy many years before illustrator Haddon Sundblom fixed his size for ever in 1932 for the first of his annual Coca-Cola paintings. Incidentally, as the drinks company has used Christmas as a strong selling point hundreds of items they have created can be seen 'Coca-Cola Collectible Santas' (ISBN 1887432930)
this is the first book of this series of photo history of Christmas cards and Santa's from the same series as the Movie Icons that i have gotten. it isn't a biography but a nice remembrance of Santa through the printed Christmas cards from a century or two back.i see there is one on Halloween too. i will have to get it too. i have a lot of the movie star books, all with photos from the Kobal collection, and there complete film histories.
This is a smaller book (smaller than standard 8.5x11 Inch) with Christmas ads of many different products. Some of the products I don't associate with Christmas (Lifesavers, gum, Furniture, toothpaste, oranges). There is no written information about the ads so you really just have a picture book and some of the ads aren't that great. The nice thing is that the images are vintage and they do make you think of the old fashioned Christmas days of the past.
JUST HORRIBLE! I BOUGHT IT TO CUT OUT OF, BUT THE REPRO'S ARE SO CRUMMY. THE COLORS ARE AWFUL,BLURRY AND USELESS. THE VALENTINE BOOK BY THE SAME AUTHOR WAS GREAT, BUT THIS ONE IS REALLYJUNK. I TOSSED IT INTO MY DONATION BOX FIVE MINUTES AFTER IT ARRIVED.
i just love these books that take me back to good childhood memories. the years melt away at the familiar sights of long ago, when anticipation of the holiday to come brought nothing but upbeat, happy anticipation. this book is a mini time machine destination, much appreciated in a hectic world full of bad news.
While I enjoyed looking at the array of graphics, and I did wallow in warm fuzzies of Christmas past, I was disappointed that most of the graphics were grainy, some cut off, and several pages of my book looked like they had been ripped by a binding machine. Still, I put it out, and people really enjoyed looking through it and smiling that smile of rememberance which Christmas can bring.
